Blood & Iron
A very American LARP about faeries and mages
Five hundred years ago, not a cradle went unplundered that didn't have iron hung above it. Wil'o'wisps lured travelers to their deaths and beautiful young mortals were spirited away for the entertainment of the Faerie courts. Five hundred years ago, the Prometheus Club formed with the intent of protecting humans from all things fae. In the ensuing centuries, the Prometheans bound the magic of Faerie in steel and iron, wrapping the world in railroads and dampening the belief of mortals in magic. They were so successful that most mortals have forgotten Faerie even exists. Now Faerie is weakened and diminished, and the time has come for the mages of the Prometheus Club to strike the final blow. Tonight's the night of Halloween, when the Faerie court do ride and the worlds are closer than at any other time. But Faerie is not without its secrets or its weapons, and all of those may come to bear tonight.
True Faerie tales don't end with "happily ever after." If you achieve a single one of your stated goals you should be ecstatic, and even more so if you do it without imperiling your immortal soul. Unless you're fae. Faeries don't have immortal souls, so you'll have to find something else to imperil. Nothing in Faerie comes free.
This is a classic MIT-style secrets and powers LARP. It is unlikely you have ever played a LARP of this style before unless you have attended a LARP convention in the US or played one of the American imports in the UK.
Some differences from what you are used to may include:
- Low immersion in terms of set dressing and costuming.
- Physical conflict is resolved via Darkwater Combat, which involves some math.
- Character sheets are up to two pages in length and at least 1/3rd of that is mechanics.
- Players are expected to pursue their goals with every capability they and their characters possess rather than trying to uplift other players' stories.
- The action is fast-paced; you should not expect more than a few minutes to sit alone in a corner having feelings.
Do I expect Finns to love this format and want to adopt it? No! Do I expect it to be an interesting and educational experience for everyone? Yes! So come play a LARP unlike any you've played before and unlike any you are likely to ever get a chance to play again.
This is often a high-death game. There is a good chance your character will die before the game ends.
This game has a medium-low amount of mechanics (by the US standard) for most players with some players experiencing more complex mechanics and puzzles. Expect to spend a lot of time reading posters on the walls that tell you what you see. Players will be encouraged to costume but will also be wearing name badges that may describe features difficult/impossible to costume for.
Content you may encounter in this game includes betrayal, simulated violence, law enforcement officers, betrayal, alcohol, drug use, aggressive social interactions such as screaming, seduction, enthrallment, mind control, and betrayal.
